Learn Valuable Skills to Improve Your Writing

I’ve been facilitating Creative Writing Workshops (CWW) for women since 2016. In 2020, I launched the Creative Writing Club (CWC) for middle school-aged girls.

Creative Writing Workshops for Women

The CWW for women is a two-hour session, combining writing exercises, instruction, and ‘workshop’ time, where writers share their work and receive feedback in a supportive environment. No matter what type of writing you’d like to pursue – fiction, memoir, articles, or personal essays – you will learn valuable skills to improve your writing. You will also gain greater confidence in your writing and achieve deeper self- awareness.

Creative Writing Club for Girls

In 2020, I launched the Creative Writing Club (CWC) for middle school-aged girls. The CWC for girls is an hour and fifteen-minute session, where girls learn techniques, explore writing with creative prompts, and practice the vital skill of giving and receiving peer feedback. They also become comfortable expressing themselves and honoring their unique writing voice, and we have fun!

Workshop FAQ

Anyone who wants to write can write – all you need is the desire (and a pencil, pen or
computer).

Many women don’t set aside time for themselves to explore activities like writing, and need to get away from their environments, like going to the gym. Most girls are too busy with schoolwork to pursue creative writing. An added benefit is social interaction; the girls consider their Creative Writing “Club,” to be just that! The writing exercises and sharing of one’s work build camaraderie.

In a classic ‘writer’s workshop,’ writers read their work, and everyone gives their constructive (and gentle) feedback. That is the ideal way to grow as a writer. Everyone can benefit from critique given; it will improve your writing, open you up to new ideas, and help you can objectivity about your writing.

In the CWC, we work on teaching the girls the valuable skills of listening to others,
giving constructive feedback, and how to receive critique.

This is a  creative writing class – but that does not mean only fiction. There is a genre called creative non-fiction. Many of the personal essays you read in magazines are of this ilk – someone takes a true-life event and crafts it into a story, using fiction’s literary devices. The tools used by fiction writers are valuable assets for any type of writing.

The workshop is for all levels – experienced writers or novices can benefit from the
writing exercises, feedback, and group support. Writing is like anything – exercising,
painting, baking – the more you do it, the more comfortable and better you get.

Each person has her unique “voice.” This voice is the articulation of the specific
language, style, tone, and personality of each individual. In essence, your voice is the
best expression of “you being you.” By practicing writing, one taps into her voice more and more, and can learn to be her authentic self with a distinctive self-expression.

Yes. And no. We cover various topics, such as characterization, plot, point-of-view,
narration, etc. Each class is designed to stand alone. Yet as we share our work and give
feedback, we will refer to previous classes, techniques and the like.

Don’t worry – it sounds like a lot, but I break down the process and make it accessible
and fun! And one of the best parts of the CWW and CWC is sharing your work and listening to other women and girls read. It’s amazing how much is inside each of us, and just needs a little encouragement to come out!
